How To Be An Artist

Ideation

How to be an artist zine was my introduction into what a zine is. It was project during my illustration class, with our prompt being “how to”. I stumbled around for a while to figure out what I wanted this zine to be and to say, and what was my step by step guide going to be for someone. And then I stumbled across this idea of how to be an artist, it felt fitting because I myself was struggling to be artistic.

Rough Sketches

For this project we were to use sharpies and other materials to outline our zines, our only rule was that we couldn’t use a computerized typeface. I started to sketch the layout and get an idea for what I wanted to put in the zine. I made rough sketches with sharpie, and fit my story in with custom typefaces. I iterated, and iterated until I came up with something that felt refined enough.

Custom sharpie typefaces, Sketchy sharpie illustrations, Complex layouts, a cool folding up 11x17 zine. What’s not to love?

In Conclusion

For me, this was probably one of my coolest projects that I ever worked on, and it remains one of my favorite that I have made so far. The process of ideating, and the actual content of the zine resonate with me and it helped figure out how to tell stories. This is one of the most underrated things in design in mu opinion. How do we tell a story with our art and design that is meaningful? For me I feel like this is where this idea started.
