The Brief

As the illustration class started to develop we started to take a look at where we could actually apply illustration in real life. How could we take a skill learned in class and apply It to our careers as graphic designers? One of the first ways that we explored this was through editorial illustration. Our assignment was to find an article that we found interesting and felt like we had a strong understanding of, so we could create illustrations for it.

I chose an article about the origins of an abstract concept called manifesting, something that has definitely interested me for a while now. The idea that you can attract what you want to be in your life just by thinking about it. I started to develop a style of how I wanted this project to look and I had take a bit of different approach than I had before. I started to make my illustration in more of a manual way using a sharpie and a scanner to create them, whereas before I would have made this illustration solely on the computer.

I found the process of creating illustration manually allowed me to think a little bit more abstractly, which is exactly what I needed for this project. As the project developed I started to focus in on how the illustration would fit in with the article, and decided that it would be a series of illustrations that would span across several different pages. All with this abstract sense of line creating a movement of thought that originated from your mind.

The idea of manifesting is one that you control your destiny. Using abstract line and this consistent AirPod like character helped me to illustrate this concept. After figuring out what quotes I wanted to pull and how the article was going to fit into the pages, I honed in on exactly what the illustration would be creating consistency in color, illustration and hierarchy between the pages.
